The water feathers ( Hottonia ) are a genus of the primrose family (Primulaceae), within which they are the only aquatic plants . Of the only two species, one is common in North America and the other in Eurasia .

description

Water feather species are perennial, herbaceous water plants . The submerged, bare leaves are pinnate, alternate or whorled , the individual lobes are linear, young leaves are rolled down at the edges.

The golden inflorescence stands on an inflorescence stem protruding above the surface of the water, the flowers are in several whorls that overlap each other. The hermaphrodite flowers are heterostyle with a double flower envelope . The crown is white to pink in color and can be both longer and shorter than the calyx . The corolla lobes are spread out and notched. The stamens are attached to the corolla tube. The scar is heady.

The capsule fruit opens laterally, it contains only a few seeds with a net-shaped relief.

The chromosome number is 2n = 20 or 22.

Botanical history

The scientific generic name Hottonia was given by Hermann Boerhaave in memory of Peter Hotton and later taken over by Carl von Linné .
