The Santa Teresa hydropower plant is located in the Andes on the Río Urubamba in the central south of Peru , 80 km northwest of Cusco . The power plant is located in the Machupicchu district in the far west of the Urubamba province ( Cusco region ). The facility, which was built in 2012–2015, is operated by Luz del Sur.
Hydroelectric power plant
The hydropower plant, located at an altitude of 2,438 m , is not far from the town of Santa Teresa , the administrative center of the district of the same name . The cavern power plant is located on the right mountain slope. It is supplied with turbine water from the Machupicchu hydropower plant, which is almost 6 km upstream . The water reaches the nacelle via a 3.6 km long supply tunnel and a subsequent pressure pipe. This houses two Francis turbines with an output of 49 MW each. The net height of fall is 178 m. The expansion water volume is 61 m³ / s. Annual energy production is expected to be 722 million kWh. Below the power plant, the water returns to the river via a 240 m long drainage tunnel. The power plant is remotely controlled from a control room in Lima .
