Success in water polo

The Wasserfreunde Hannover became German water polo champions eight times. A winning streak from 1921 to 1923 was followed by a title in 1927. From 1936 to 1938, three more titles in a row followed. The club won its last title in 1948. In the only Olympic victory of the German water polo players at the Olympic Summer Games in 1928 , two water lovers, Karl Behre and Fritz Gunst, played in the victorious team; with Otto Kühne and Heini Atmer two other players were part of the German squad, but they were not used. With one Olympic gold medal and two Olympic silver medals, Fritz Gunst is the most successful water polo player among water lovers.

After the war, the Wasserfreunde played for many years in the Oberliga Nord as the highest class and in the 50s also came to several national finals. In the Bundesliga, which was introduced in 1969, the club was never able to establish itself permanently and in 2003 entered a syndicate with the established city rival Waspo Hannover-Linden as SG W98 / Waspo Hannover . There were national youth titles in 1983 for the C youth and 1985 and 1986 for the B youth.

Club life

The top swimmers mainly trained under the leadership of the Lower Saxony State Swimming Association in the adjacent sports center in Hanover and the Lower Saxony Olympic Training Center in the association's cadre groups. In Stadionbad including the normal training operations took place. There were numerous other training groups, from beginners to amateur athletes to senior swimmers, who trained in five different pools.
