The Outjo water tower is located in Outjo , in the Kunene region in Namibia . Outjo served as an important military base in South West Africa during the German colonial era . The stone tower is on the edge of a river by the Etosha Garden Hotel .
history
In 1897, Major Theodor Leutwein established a military base in Outjo . The stone tower was built in 1900 by the Schutztruppe and put into operation on March 1st, 1901. Today the Outjos business district is on the site of the former military station. The stone tower in Outjo was officially proclaimed as a National Monument in Namibia on August 1st, 1957 .
designation
The name is misleading insofar as it is not a water tower in the usual sense (with a water reservoir), but a supporting structure for a wind turbine , similar to a tower windmill . Therefore, the name of a result that the wind wheel as a drive for a mechanical pump was used, with the ground water was pumped from an underground water resources.
In local parlance, it is sometimes referred to as the powder tower , as the German protection force is said to have stored gunpowder here .
description
The 9.4 meter high stone tower was built from natural stone and clay over a stone well. The water was pumped from the well into a concrete basin by means of a wooden windmill on the top of the tower and from there it was conveyed with a 620 meter long pipeline to the military station, where there are the barracks, the officers' mess, the kitchen, the stables and the hospital Water supplied.
