Vassily Latyschew ( Russian Василий Васильевич Латышев , scientific. Transliteration Vasilij Vasil'evič Latyšev ; born July 29 . Jul / 10. August  1855 greg. In Dijewo , Tver province , now Tver Oblast ; † 2. May 1921 in Petrograd ) was a Russian epigraphist , classical philologist and ancient historian .

Life

Vasily Latyshev studied classical philology and history and was particularly influenced by Theodor Sokolow . After completing his studies, he first became a teacher at the grammar school in Vilnius , then he switched to teaching at the historical-philological institute of the University of Saint Petersburg , of which he later became director. In 1890 Latyshev was also assistant to the university council of the Kazan educational district . In 1885 Latyshev became a full member of the German Archaeological Institute , in 1891 at the request of Ulrich Köhler , Theodor Mommsen , Adolf Kirchhoff and Ernst Curtius ' corresponding member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences and in 1893 a full member of the Russian Academy of Sciences .

Latyshev wrote, among other things, a book on the history of ancient Olbias and another book on the calendars of several Greek tribes and cities, but his outstanding merit lies in Greek epigraphy . Between 1885 and 1901 he brought out the four-volume work Inscriptiones antiquae orae septentrionalis Ponti Euxini, Graecae et Latinae . In it he collected the inscriptions of the Black Sea region in the form of the Corpus Inscriptionum Graecarum . This area had always been problematic for those who worked on the work, which was initiated from Germany, as they often lacked the linguistic prerequisites and the contacts to be able to evaluate the finds with inscriptions that were widely scattered in Russia. The work, which was partly published in the second edition in 1916, was reprinted in 1965. Other works by Latyshev that were never translated into German were reprinted by the Zentralantiquariat of the German Democratic Republic in the 1970s. The special appreciation of Latyshev's work is evident from the unusually early election as a corresponding member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences at the age of only 35.
