geography

The place is on the county road 522 between Lühnde and Groß Lobke .

history

Wätzum with the name Wetcende was first mentioned in a document in 1274 by Pope Gregory X, in which he confirmed his ownership to the Sültekloster in Hildesheim. In Old Saxon times it belonged to the settlements in Hastfalagau and was later ecclesiastically oriented towards the parish of Lühnde. The quarry stone chapel in the village center was built in the 14th century by the local farmers.

In addition to the Sültekloster, the landowners in Wätzum were the Johannesstift, the St. Andrew's Church and the Kreuzstift in Hildesheim and, in the 14th century, the knight Hugo von Escherde.

Since 1885 Wätzum has belonged to the Hildesheim district or the Hildesheim-Marienburg district .

Incorporations

On March 1, 1974, the village was incorporated into the municipality of Algermissen.

coat of arms

Wätzum coat of arms
Blazon : "In red a slight left set golden spearhead ."
Justification of the coat of arms: The Wätzum municipal coat of arms impresses with its simplicity and is reminiscent of the oldest coat of arms. It comes from a Kersten von Watekum (Christian von Wätzum), who had this coat of arms in his seal, which has been preserved to this day. It is safely kept in the State Archives in Hanover. The golden lance tip is reminiscent of tournaments and knight games and at the same time of hunting and feuds. But it also reminds of noble knight virtues.
