Wawa is a township (municipality) in the Algoma District in the Canadian province of Ontario with 2905 inhabitants (2016).

geography

Wawa is bounded to the west by the Michipicoten River and to the east by Wawa Lake . About 165 kilometers south is Sault Ste. Marie and 260 kilometers east of Timmins . The Trans-Canada Highway touches Wawa in the west. The northeastern shore of the Upper Lake begins at a distance of eight kilometers in the southwest.

history

The first settlers from Europe explored the shores of Lake Superior at the beginning of the 17th century , made contact with the Ojibwe Indians, bought land from them by buying them and primarily traded in fur . After copper , iron ore and also gold were found in the area , numerous mines started operating and the time was called Wawa Gold Rush . Due to fluctuations in pricing, these mines were temporarily closed and reopened. In 1899 Wawa received city rights. The name of the place means 'wild goose' in the Ojibwe language . This name was obviously chosen because every year huge flocks of Canada geese ( Branta canadensis ) rest there on their wanderings at Wawa Lake .

To improve the infrastructure and to maintain a convenient connection to the road network, the inhabitants of Wawa fought for this goal for years. When a connection to the Trans-Canada Highway was finally completed in 1960, there was still a disappointment because the road only touches the town and does not lead through the center. In order to seduce travelers to a stay in Wawa, an 8.50 meter high statue of a Canada goose, some parts made of plastic, was set up on the highway as an eye-catcher. In fact, over the years this unique piece has developed into one of the most photographed still images in North America. As the figure soon had numerous damaged areas due to weather conditions, all main components have now been replaced by a steel structure.
