We Could Be the Same (Turkish: Aynı Olabilirdik ) is a song by the Turkish nu-metal band maNga and their contribution to the Eurovision Song Contest 2010 , which took place on May 29th in Fornebu / Bærum near Oslo .

As early as January 2010 it was announced that the band would represent Turkey at the Eurovision Song Contest. At that time the band was already actively preparing their song suggestions.

In February, the band sent three song suggestions to the Turkish TV broadcaster TRT , which selected the participating entry for the competition. All songs are written in English .

On March 3rd, TRT announced that We Could Be the Same would be the official Turkish contribution to the ESC. On the same day, the song was also released as a download single .

The lyrics and music of the song were written by singers Ferman Akgül and Evren Özdemir. The CD single , which is produced by Sony Music Entertainment , was released on May 20, 2010.

Eurovision Song Contest

In the second semi-final, the song took first place with 118 points ahead of Safura ( Azerbaijan ; 113 points ) and Sofia Nizharadze ( Georgia ; 106 points ).

At the Eurovision Song Contest 2010, which took place on May 29, 2010 in Fornebu / Bærum near Oslo , the song reached second place with 170 points just ahead of Romania (162) and only had to let Lena with her song Satellite come first. The band received twelve points each from Azerbaijan , France and Croatia .

Like the other countries, Turkey cannot choose itself at the ESC either.

After the ESC

The song reached number 29 on the Swedish charts on June 4, 2010 . It is the band's first chart placement outside of their own country. A week later the song also entered the Swiss charts, where it was 56th.

Music video

In their official music video, which was produced for Eurovision to present their song, the band can be seen on an abandoned factory site. There are several people around the band who do not move during the entire video. Some of these have guns and wear war paint . Only two people wave white and black flags at the beginning and the end of the video .

During the choreography in the semifinals and in the final of the Eurovision Song Contest you can see the band and a robot , which moves during the song and "emerges" towards the end of the song.

The song is about the love of the protagonist to an unknown woman . He describes it as his dream and says that it could be far more than it is worth to itself.

He goes on to say that the world is a stage for him and love is a never-ending drama . He makes it clear to her that they can beat the others together with their weapons.

In the chorus the protagonist says that he is in love with her, but without knowing her name . He also says that they could be the same for at least one night , which is supposed to suggest that the protagonists have different traits .
