Weir systems with water features

The fortifications in Schweinfurt are among the old botanical gardens in Germany, they were laid out in the 19th century . Today's city park extends with its foothills along the Main over 2 km out of the city. A zoological garden opened in 1880 until it was destroyed in 1944 . Today the fortifications continue to serve as an urban recreational area, with restaurants, beer gardens and on the banks of the Main with sports clubs, boat harbors and bathing facilities.

location

The fortifications are not far from the old town on the right side of the Main, on the left side of the Main, immediately south of the Main and its tributary Saumain . The city park stretches along both bodies of water. Despite the proximity to the old town, the weir systems are close to nature in the floodplains on the eastern edge of the city. The Sennfelder Seenkranz runs not far to the south .

The path through the fortifications then continues on the banks of the Main, past Mainberg Castle in the right-hand Main region and ends at Schonungen Bay .

etymology

The name weir systems comes from a weir , which is questionable (see: Sennfelder Seenkranz, former northern river island ).

description

Pine in the weir systems

In the area close to the city center, the weir systems are a city park that overflows to the outside into a forest park and alluvial forest , with areas similar to primeval forest on the banks of the Main. A public street with parking facilities leads through the area close to the city center. The larger, outer area is a landscape conservation area . The weir systems are located on a slightly elevated area (see: Sennfelder Seenkranz, former northern river island ).

A 2.5 km or, alternatively, 4 km long jogging route leads through the facilities . At the edge of the fortifications, on the Main, there are boat harbors, including from the Schweinfurt Ruder Club Franken from 1882 , with a regatta course and a terrace restaurant. The city park hall with restaurant and beer garden is located in the fortifications .

history

Originally the area of the weir systems was before the Main expansion until the middle of the 19th century, a flood plain and alluvial forest . Shortly afterwards the area became a promenade and parade ground for the imperial city military. The Gademann paint factory was on the Main. The city garden authority had its beginnings here (today at the main cemetery in the garden city ).

Green house , once the office building of the Gademann paint factory

Only three decades after Germany's first botanical garden was founded near Hockenheim, Carl Sattler procured plants from North America , where the climate is comparable to that of Lower Franconia . Magistratesrat Sattler was supported by Mayor Carl von Schultes .

From 1869 to 1890 the park was laid out on Gademann'schen Hill (old name: Auf dem Börklein ), mainly with plants from China , Japan and Korea . Antler trees, turkey oak , red oak , hickory nut and Hungarian oak date from the early years.

There was also a private zoo in the park from 1880 to 1944, including a predator house . The zoo was relocated in 1880; it was previously located in what is now the northeastern part of the city on Teilberg, on what is now Hofrat-Graetz-Straße. In 1891, in the age of the high bikes , a 333 meter long cycling track was built on the weir systems, partly on the Sennfelder district .
