history

Former zoological gardens

The tradition of the zoological gardens in Schweinfurt can be traced back to the middle of the 19th century. As early as 1869 there was a private zoo on the Teilberg (near Kiliansberg ), which was moved to the weir systems in 1879. In addition to native animals, exotic species were also represented here ( predator house , bears , monkeys , zebras ). In 1944 the zoo was hit in a bomb attack and closed. After the war, Professor Bernhard Grzimek from Frankfurt a. M. as leaseholder and operator and drafted an expansion plan for the zoo, which was not implemented. From 1949 the zoo became orphaned and fell into disrepair.

wildlife Park

From 1962, 2.5 kilometers further north, the so-called forest playground with the first animal enclosures was built at today's location . The area was always accessible on the forest paths leading through, the official opening year of the wildlife park is 1966. The municipal forest office was responsible for planning, construction management and design. The construction of the forest playground, including the water playground, was completed in 1977. Since the 1990s, the extensive area has been expanded and expanded to today's wildlife park by the oaks with additional attractions (e.g. elk , vulture , show farm, themed playgrounds) .

The wildlife park in the affluent city, with mostly high trade tax revenues , was expanded over time and provided with additional staff. The park has almost unlimited potential for expansion in the urban forest.

Closer surroundings

Wildlife park as a starting point in the Schweinfurt Rhön , in winter 2010

The wildlife park is the most important starting point for hikes in the city forest and the Schweinfurt Rhön . Paths lead from the wildlife park to the Brönnhof , with Bavaria's largest national natural heritage ( wild horses ).

Until the 1980s this was up to 421  m above sea level. NHN region still practiced winter sports, u. a. Cross-country skiing at the hut of the German Alpine Club An der Haselstaude near Thomashof . Today the region is still a winter hiking area when there is less snow. The toboggan run from the wildlife park down to the Zellergrund still exists.
