geography

course

Overview

The Höllenbach flows through the southwestern part of the Hesselbacher Waldland (also: Schweinfurter Rhön ) in the main southwest-south direction to the Main. In the lower third it flows through the eastern edge of the Schweinfurt urban area.

Source and upper course

The Höllenbach rises at an altitude of 401  m above sea level. NHN at the small Hoppachshofer See in Hoppachshof , a district of the community of Üchtelhausen . The brook leaves the pond underground and reappears on the outskirts. It now flows through fields and meadows in a south-westerly direction, then crosses under the district road SW 5 ( Thomashöfer Straße ) and then runs south past the hamlet of Thomashof . There he enters the deciduous forest and flows between the slopes of the forest meadows Thomasschlag and Beavershecke on his left and the corridor Stückschlag on the right. It only has intermittent water here. It then runs through the Hoppachs Grundgraben along the wooded slope of the Outer Thick Mountain and shortly thereafter passes the Fuchsberg to the west .

Üchtelhauser reason

The Höllenbach crosses Üchtelhausen underground and reappears on the surface at the southern edge of the village. Immediately afterwards it is fed on its left side by the drain of the Rossbrunnen . The stream now flows through a valley cut deep into the Hesselbach woodland, the Üchtelhäuser Grund , which is lined with deciduous forest, east of the Schweinfurt city forest. First it flows along the western edge of the meadow, which has recently also been used for agriculture. He passes the Dicken Berg to the east, then changes to the east side of the bottom and shortly afterwards enters the area of the city of Schweinfurt . In this area it marks the border to the neighboring community of Schonungen for a short distance .

Hell Valley

Shortly after the city limits, the Üchtelhäuser Grund widens into the Höllental , a traditional Schweinfurt local recreation area. It lines the eastern edge of the built-up urban area. The western slopes of the valley are now flatter and mostly unwooded. The eastern slopes are still steep and wooded, but are now cut through by clearings on which vineyards once lay (see: Viticulture ). The Höllental was settled between the 1920s and 1950s through wild urban development.

The northern quarry on the Lettenleite, on the eastern slope of the Höllental

The Höllenbach initially runs along the Deutschhof district and with the eastern clearing Im Grund passes the first, former vineyard. Shortly afterwards it reaches the second eastern clearing Am Bramberg , is fed by the Hexenbrünnle and then runs past a biotope . The creek now runs southwest through the Höllental, accompanied by the street of the same name and passes two higher areas to the west that belong to the Deutschhof district: the Deutschfeldfriedhof and the Zeilbaum residential district . The valley was redesigned here in the 1970s into a near-natural recreational area with integrated flood polders . After the western valley slope of Rothbühl , the Höllenbach turns south again and now runs along the north-eastern district to the west . The creek is happening here on the eastern slope, the Latvians Leite , with two disused quarries, now a Geotop in a conservation area . Then the Höllenbach disappears underground.

Peterstirn Castle Hill , at the mouth of the Höllenbach in the Main

He finally reaches a small part of the city that emerged in the course of the 20th century, the so-called old town . It is located at the foot of the Peterstirn castle hill east of the Höllenbach , a spur between Höllen- and Mainal. The stream reappears after the B 26 ( Mainberger Straße ), which is downgraded to the State Road St 2447 in this section, and immediately afterwards crosses the Bamberg – Rottendorf railway line . Immediately afterwards it flows out at about Main-kilometer 334 at an altitude of 209  m above sea level. NHN from the right into the Main approaching from the east-northeast.

Viticulture

On the eastern side of the Höllental valley, viticulture was practiced until at least the 19th century, on the former vineyards (from north to south): Grund , Bramberg , Lettenleite and Schind . For this purpose, the southern and western slopes of the forest were cleared to the boundaries of the urban area (historical boundary stones) that have not changed until today. Today there are only vineyards at the mouth of the Höllenbach in the Main, at the Peterstirn (vineyard: Peterstirn ). The former vineyards are now mainly occupied by orchards, gardens and scattered settlements.

Üchtelhäuser Grund and Höllental are Schweinfurt local recreation areas. From the mouth of the Main to Üchtelhausen there is a hiking trail that begins on the Main Cycle Route . Wine festivals are held twice a year in the winery on the Peterstirn .

There are two historic inns at the foot of the Peterstirn. The Hirschkeller (formerly the Brückenbräukeller ) is a larger tavern similar to a hall that was built at the beginning of the 20th century as an excursion restaurant on the Main. Zur Hölle (currently closed in 2020) with a beer garden under large chestnut trees was the location of the traditional old town church fair, which is currently being held on the city wall at Zurich .

A hiking trail leads over the Peterstirn to the Schindturm , a lookout tower built by the Rhön Club in 1892 . On the Bramberg is the Almrösl , another traditional destination on the edge of the forest, with a playground, beer garden and a wide view of the city.

Legends

In the Höllental, the witches used to gather every year on Walburgis Night and then " hurrdihopp past the Hexenbrünnlein and the Höllenbach up north ".
