Gungolding fortified church
The fortified church Gungolding is a former fortified church on the site of today's parish church of the Assumption of Mary on a hill on the road to Pfahldorf outside of Gungolding (St. Marienstraße 16) a district of the municipality of Walting in the Eichstätt district in Bavaria .
The basement of the church tower with a Gothic pointed arch window on the east side and the cemetery wall (cemetery fortification) with its original quarry stone walls still bear witness to the former medieval fortified church, which probably served as a refuge for the local population . The nave was extended to the west, raised and redesigned in a Baroque style in 1740 according to plans by the Eichstätter court building director Gabriel de Gabrieli , and the octagonal upper floor of the tower was built.
