Emsing fortified church

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The fortified church Emsing is a partially preserved fortified church in the place of today's Catholic parish church St. Martin at the northern exit towards Morsbach of the municipality part of Emsing of the market Titting in the district of Eichstätt in the nature park Altmühltal in Bavaria .

The church was consecrated (consecrated) in 1277 by Bishop Hildebrand von Möhren , which indicates the time it was built. The basement of today's church tower probably originated from her. The key notches in the tower, an underground escape route and the remains of the high cemetery walls (cemetery fortifications) indicate the defensive character of the church and its use as a refuge for the local population .

In 1612 the nave and the bell storey were built and extensions were made in 1738 and 1869. The appearance of the interior of the church originated in the Baroque era and still characterizes the parish church of St. Martin today .
