The fortified church of Kinding with the church patronage of the Birth of Mary is a late medieval fortified church at 378  m above sea level. NHN is located in the town of Kinding in the municipality of the same name in the Upper Bavarian district of Eichstätt on the northern slope of the Altmühltal .

history

According to old tradition, the Bavarian liege lord von Kinding, Ulrich I. Schenk von Geyern , built the church, or at least the nave, from the demolition material from his castle after 1310 . The basement of the church tower, however, dates back to the Romanesque period.

description

church

The nave has five axes. In 1357 three altars and two cemeteries were consecrated , in 1406 a fourth altar. At the end of the 16th century or the beginning of the 17th century, the upper floor of the non-articulated bell tower in the east of the church was built in brick . In 1602, during the visitation of the Vicar General Vitus Priefer in Eichstatt , the church had four altars, including an Andreas altar "novum et egregie pictum" ( Latin for "new and outstandingly painted"). 1732 the two baroque side altars in the church, which came early rococo - high altar followed in 1738. 1792, the paneled flat ceiling was replaced by a white blanket; four years later the altars were given new "tumbes" (coffin-like substructures) and the pulpit with its polygonal body, built in 1680, had a new sound cover ; the latter was redesigned in 1796 in a classical style with a vase closure. In 1907 the nave was extended to the west. The eight-sided brick helmet of the church tower shows not only the usual, but also colored glazed tiles laid in patterns.

Interior of the church

Behind the baroque choir arch is the choir with a high flat ceiling in the east tower. Except for a small arched window there from the Romanesque period, all church windows are baroque. In the ceiling painting of the nave, painted by Willibald Wunderer in 1792 , the patronage depicts the “ Birth of Mary ”. There are two statues of Mary , a late Gothic one from 1420 under the gallery and a Baroque one from 1738 on the high altar, which was located at the gate entrance to the inner cemetery fortifications. The font consists of a shell basin on a baluster base from the end of the 17th century.

The sacristy with its coffered ceiling from 1687 is on the north side of the choir. On the south side of the church, to the right of the entrance, there is a late Gothic mount of Olives carved from wood (around 1500). The mountain cross on the edge of the Altmühltal above the church was erected in 1857.

The church is the Catholic parish church of the parish of Kinding, an original parish of the Eichstätt diocese (2007: 495 Catholics) in the Beilngries deanery ; the parish is provided by the pastor of the nearby parish of Enkering , where there is also a fortified church.

Five-wound chapel

Southern defense tower

For 1474 which is the consecration of a Michael chapel above the Karner handed the cemetery. She leaned against the southeast corner tower of the Bering. In 1687 it was given today's two-story design. The chapel's patronage refers to the veneration of the five wounds of Christ ; There was a Five Wound Brotherhood in Kinding , for whose prayer the chapel was built in 1687.

Rings

The existing fortification consists of a lower (southern) cemetery and an upper (northern, slightly higher) cemetery and church ring, (no longer existing) battlements on the upper, northern ring and three defense towers in a common shield wall , also on the upper one Berings . The two rings (the designation "double ring" would be misleading) are proven for 1357; even then there was an inner and an outer cemetery under their protection. The parish church and the five-wound chapel are also located in the upper Bering. The three towers on the south side of the upper ring are, however, post-Gothic. The tower on the northwest corner and the middle tower have stepped gables with gable roofs and are open on the inside of the upper ring. The tower on the southeast corner has a brick helmet with a four-sided lantern and a curved dome as a conclusion. The wall ledges can still be seen from the battlements . There are also loopholes to be seen. In times of imminent threat, the population sought refuge in the upper Bering, while their belongings and above all cattle were housed in the lower, towerless Bering.
