description

The late Gothic fortified church was changed in the 18th century. The height of the cemetery wall is about four meters; on the south side there is a gate tower (with the wall probably dating from the 16th century). The church tower attached to the nave in the east was partially demolished in 1751 and the top “26 foot octagonal bricked up”.

The choir still has its late Gothic ribbed cross vault. In it, the four-column high altar from 1759 (covered with gold in 1767) shows St. Michael St. Sebastian and St. Gunthildis as painted wooden figures (around 1500). The two side altars have two columns (around 1720). In the left is St. Sigmund , a “very good work of the late 15th century.” A Gunthildis wood sculpture in the nave dates from around 1470. Nine paintings from 1630 show scenes from the Gunthildis legend on the left wall of the church; opposite is a cycle of pictures from the life of St. Sigismund, painted in 1517 and overpainted in 1630. In 1781 Willibald Wunderer from Eichstätt painted the ceiling painting “ Fall of the Angels ”. Numerous votive pictures go back to the Gunthildis pilgrimage of this church, which was moved from Schambachtal near Treuchtlingen to Biberbach after the Reformation .

On the outside wall of the church is the tombstone of the church musician and Benedictine Roman Reutter , who moved to Biberbach in 1806 when the Plankstetten monastery was dissolved and died there in 1807. He had composed several masses and litanies and the music for the Singspiel "Der Weinberg des Naboth ". Around the church is the local cemetery.

Biberbach was referred to as a branch of the Plankstetten monastery parish as early as 1558.

Due to late medieval and early modern finds, the area of the branch church was designated as a ground monument by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation (D-1-6934-0078).
