history

View from the south

Weißig is located on the slope of the Windmühlenberg, in the midst of an idyllic landscape of ponds, meadows and forests. The Sorbian settlement was first mentioned in documents in 1374 . The place name is derived from its location: "Wysok", from the Sorbian Wysoka, the height. In the course of time the name has been changed several times to the present form.

In Weißig it is customary to sing the Weißiger Heimatlied on village occasions. The annual maypole raising and throwing followed by the selection of the may queen as well as the carnival and the kite festival in Weißig are also an established tradition.

Weissig originally belonged to the Upper Sorbian language area. For his statistics on the Sorbian population in Upper Lusatia, Arnošt Muka determined a population of 274 in the 1880s, including 228 Sorbs (83%) and 46 Germans. In 1956 Ernst Tschernik counted a Sorbian-speaking population of only 7.1% in the municipality of Weißig, including not a single young person. The language has now disappeared from everyday local life.
