history

Liebegast, then a farming village, was first mentioned in a document in 1419 as Lubegast . The place name is derived from the personal name Lubogost, the name of the supposed founder of the place. The residents of Liebegast had to pay taxes to the local landlords. As early as 1625, Liebegast was first mentioned by the name in today's spelling. In 1777 the place is referred to as the Vorwerk of the Skaska manor.

On July 1, 1950, Liebegast was incorporated into Sollschwitz . The community of Sollschwitz was dissolved on January 1, 1994 in the course of a municipal reform, while Sollschwitz was incorporated into Wittichenau and Liebegast moved to the community of Oßling .

Population and language

In 1777 the population of Liebegast consisted of two possessed men as well as seven gardener families and one family of cottagers. A homestead lay desolate. In 1825 the place had 91 inhabitants, this number rose to 119 inhabitants by 1885. In the following years the number of inhabitants fell again to 105 in 1905, but by 1925 the number rose again to 129 inhabitants. After the end of the Second World War , the population rose to 165 as a result of refugees from eastern Germany, and the number has been falling continuously since then. Most of the residents of Liebegast are of the Evangelical Lutheran denomination.

Originally, Liebegast belonged to the Upper Sorbian language area . In the statistics on the Sorbian population in Lusatia, Arnošt Muka determined a population of 99 in 1884, of which 92 were Sorbs (92%). The use of Sorbian in everyday language has almost completely disappeared to this day.
