description

The white-rimmed milkweed is an annual plant that reaches a height of about 0.8 meters. It grows unbranched at first, but later branched to bushy starting from the central stem. The basal leaves are colored green, the bracts are white and usually show a narrow green central part. There is a certain similarity with the unrelated edelweiss ( Leontopodium nivale subsp. Alpinum ), which belongs to the Asteraceae family.

The flowering period is mostly in August and September. The actual flowers are small, inconspicuous and whitish-greenish in color and are located in the middle of the bracts.

The capsule fruits are divided into three parts and have short hairs, the seeds are smooth and light brown in color. The seeds are distributed into the environment from the capsule fruits that pop up. The annual white-rim milkweed sows by itself.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 56.

Occurrence

The homeland of the white-rimed milkweed is the western and central United States and eastern and southern Mexico . However, it also occurs as a neophyte in Central Europe . It prefers sunny locations. It is cultivated as an ornamental plant.
