The Romantic Christmas Market at Thurn und Taxis Castle is a Christmas market that has been held in Regensburg at St. Emmeram Castle by the Thurn und Taxis family since 2001 . It is held annually from the end of November throughout the entire Advent up to and including December 23rd.

background

The Christmas market has been held since 2001. There is a fee for admission, with different admission prices on weekdays and weekends. In the run-up to the 2014 edition, it was said that the number of visitors was "now over 200,000 per year". As part of the opening of the 2017 event, a value of "around 300,000 people" was communicated to the dpa in the previous year. According to the organizer, the visitors were faced with a good 100 market feeders at 130 stands who presented the guests with a range of handcrafted goods. Specifically, these were craftsmen from historical professions such as wood turner , blacksmith , Lord God carver , candle maker , nativity scene builder , potter , brush and broom maker .

In mid-November - about two weeks before the opening of the Christmas market - the traditional cutting of a Christmas tree and the presentation of the “Princely Christ Child” take place in the forest of the Thurn and Taxis family at the Halali , whose position is filled with a casting accompanied by BR and MZ . The Christ Child himself then has three appearances every day during the market to greet the guests.

The program elements also include Gloria von Thurn und Taxis reading the Christmas story and presenting Christmas classics with the support of the well-known Regensburg band Sacco & Mancetti and artists from Lebenshilfe. The Christmas singing with the visitors is her “best part of the program”, according to the lady of the house.

The princely palace park was opened to visitors for the first time in 2014. Since then, it has been open to visitors four days a week during the Christmas market.

Reports and evaluation

In 2009 the German public broadcaster DW-TV produced a four-part documentary about the Romantic Christmas Market.

In various online and print reports, some of which put together specific lists of the “most beautiful” or “most atmospheric” Christmas markets in Germany, the Romantic Christmas Market is regularly featured in both national and regional media.
