Far. The story of a journey around the world is a German documentary by Gwendolin Weisser and Patrick Allgaier. The film documents a three-and-a-half year circumnavigation of the world by the couple. The cinema premiere was on March 17, 2017 in Freiburg's Friedrichsbau-Kino, and it was broadcast for the first time on November 19, 2018 in 3sat .
content
In spring 2013 Weisser and Allgaier set out into the world from their hometown Freiburg im Breisgau. The way leads you in an easterly direction through Europe, Asia as well as North and Central America. They travel by hitchhiking, bus, train, boat or on foot. They consciously forego the plane as a means of transport. You get to know people from many different cultures. Usually one of the two takes over the filming.
In late summer 2014 in Siberia, Gwen Weisser found out that she was pregnant. The couple decide to continue the journey and give birth to the child in Mexico . They cross the Pacific from Tokyo on a container ship . In Mexico, the parents-to-be buys a van , which they convert into a mobile family home. Son Bruno was born in May 2015 and spent the first year of his life partly in a rented house or on the road in Mexico and countries in Central America . The family returned in summer 2016 and covered the last stretch of Barcelona on foot. Overall, the world tour takes over three years; the distance is almost 100,000 kilometers.
background
Parallel to the trip, Allgaier, who previously worked as a cameraman a. a. had worked for SWR, and Weisser shared their experiences on a video blog for the Badische Zeitung. The documentary with the title Weit and a travel magazine were later financed through a crowdfunding project on the Startnext platform . Almost 1,000 supporters have collected over 35,000 euros.
By the end of 2018, the film had reached 537,303 moviegoers in Germany, 28,136 in Austria and 26,841 in Switzerland.
Far. A travel magazine
In addition to the film, a travel magazine was also created. Snapshots, thoughts, images and anecdotes that Allgaier and Weisser experienced on their journey are presented on 260 pages. The book also contains recipes and around 30 short stories. The travel magazine was awarded the prize of the book art foundation “The 25 Most Beautiful Books 2018” in September 2018 and will be presented in exhibitions around the world the following year.
