Welcome to Leith is an American documentary film directed by Michael Beach Nichols and Christopher K. Walker from 2015. The film is about Craig Cobbs' attempt to take control of the city of Leith, North Dakota . On January 26, 2015, the film premiered at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival .

action

Leith is a tiny city in North Dakota that had a population of 16 in 2010. In May 2012, Craig Cobb, a Canadian-American neo-Nazi, moved to Leith to establish a majority of neo-Nazis in the place. He bought twelve lots. At first, Cobb led the life of a harmless loner in a very humble house with no running water. Then he made his plan public to transform Leith into a city that would have a majority of neo-Nazis and so could provide the mayor with the influx of neo-Nazis. Leith became the scene of a neo-Nazi rally and a counter-demonstration. The population of Leith, which also includes an African American, opposed Cobb.

Kynan Dutton, a veteran of the Iraq war, also moved to Leith and took his family with him. Dutton put flags of the Aryan nations in front of his house and he wore an SS skull on his clothes. Dutton was a member of the National Socialist Movement and committed himself to National Socialism. The atmosphere in the place was characterized by hatred, distrust and fear of death. The local council tried to disgust Cobb with an ordinance on the connection to the sewer system from the place. When Dutton and Cobb marched through the streets with rifles, the police intervened. Cobb had threatened residents and appropriately dubbed them "damn Jewish pigs" ( fucking kikes ). Both were arrested and charged. They were sentenced to several months in prison.

The residents of Leith tore down his house and Cobb moved away after his release. The residents felt a sense of fear and helplessness. Someone called the verdict a joke. The Southern Poverty Law Center linked Cobb with the right-wing terrorist Frazier Glenn Miller, Jr., who murdered Jews in Overland Park, Kansas. The Southern Poverty Law Center also complained that after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, almost all resources of the intelligence services had been used on Islamic terrorism and that right-wing terrorism was able to flourish again in the USA.

Type of representation

The film consists of interviews with Cobb, his comrade Kynan Dutton, Dutton's partner, residents of Leith ', an employee of the Southern Poverty Law Center and excerpts from council meetings , court hearings and short excerpts from news programs.

production

Nichols and Walker, who live in New York, flew to North Dakota in October 2013, two months after reading an article in the New York Times in August 2013 about Craig Cobb's plan to bring Leith to a town of white supremacy supporters transform. The directors visited Leith over an eight month period. It took them 90 days to cut the film. In June 2014, Nichols and Walker started raising funds for the making of the film. They managed to raise $ 64,751. The directors named Errol Morris as their role model when it comes to directing.

The film grossed $ 36,010.
