Corrugated gear

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A well-known application of the corrugated gear.

A corrugated gear is a simple mechanical machine . It belongs to the force converters . Corrugated gears consist of a shaft (the corrugated tree ) and a wheel attached to it (the actual corrugated gear ). Heavy loads can be lifted on tension elements with a corrugated gear.

use

Corrugated wheels are used as basic elements in winches and cranes , as they were already known in ancient times. Reels , treadmills , sprocket wheels , winches , gopels and all kinds of gear trains also work on the principle of the corrugated wheel . In the Roman Empire , corrugated wheels were used to tension crossbow strings and springs in catapult-like siege machines. Nowadays, corrugated wheels are used in bicycles and tub washing machines , among other things .

Use in historical mills

If one speaks of a "corrugated tree" in connection with historical mills, it is the extended wheel axle of the mill wheel , which extends into the mill interior, the mill chamber. Until the 19th century , the corrugated tree consisted mainly of oak trunks , which were characterized by their particular durability. In the mill room, which was always the largest and highest room in a mill, it leads to the Bied or mill frame , which served as a storage room for the corrugated tree and as a substructure for the heavy stone grinding processes . The Bied is a well-braced wooden construction made of columns , purlins , beams and thresholds . The columns are mostly round, richly profiled and often decorated with carvings .
