Wenceslaus Leszczynski (also Wacław Leszczyński ; born August 15, 1605 in Baranów , † April 1, 1666 in Łyszkowice ) was Archbishop of Gniezno and Primate of Poland-Lithuania .

Life

Leszczynski came from a noble family from the south of Greater Poland , he was the son of the voivod Andrzej Leszczynski and Zofia Opaliński. At the express request of his father, a Calvinist , he was baptized into this denomination. However, after Andrzej Leszczynski's death, his mother, a devout Catholic, raised him and his siblings to Catholicism . His brother was Jan Leszczyński , Chancellor of the Polish Crown, a half-brother was Rafał Leszczyński , leader of the Reformed in Poland.

After graduating from the Jesuit College in Poznań , he studied theology at the universities of Perugia , Padua and Paris . From 1630 he was secretary to King Sigismund III. Wasa .

From 1633 he was a canon in Krakow and provost in Płock and Łęczyca . He was ordained a priest in 1637, and from 1643 onwards, Leszczynski was secretary of the crown.

On April 6, 1644 he was elected Bishop of Warmia by the cathedral chapter . Pope Innocent X confirmed him on December 16, 1644, and he was ordained bishop on April 23, 1645 by Archbishop Giovanni de Torres in the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Warsaw . He was also the Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Samland .

On January 27, 1659 he was appointed Archbishop of Gniezno . He died on April 1, 1666 in Łyszkowice.
