Wendy Orr (* 1953 in Edmonton , Canada ) is an Australian author for children and young people.

Life

Wendy Orr was born in Canada and grew up in Longuyon , Magny-Metz , Ottawa , Red Deer , Colorado Springs , Toronto and Middleton in Nova Scotia , as her father was employed by the Air Force and changed locations frequently. Already in her childhood she decided to become a writer. At the age of nine, she wrote Spring Island , which she later saw as an anticipation or first version of her book Nim's Island . After initially considering studying journalism and then training to be an animal caretaker, she studied occupational therapy in London . In Wales she met her future husband Tom, with whom she moved to Australia after completing her education. There she first worked in Albury as an occupational therapist. In 1980 the family bought a farm in Victoria . About 20 years later, Wendy Orr and her husband moved to a bush plot in the Mornington Peninsula Shire that she was trying to create as a habitat for wildlife.

In 1986, Wendy Orr wrote the picture book Amanda's Dinosaur . In 1991, after a car accident, she was no longer able to work as an occupational therapist; the accident and the rehabilitation went into the book Peeling the Onion . In 1993 Leaving it to You was shortlisted by the Children's Book Council of Australia Book of the Year, junior readers; In 1995 Ark in the Park won this award. Peeling the Onion was awarded the 1997 Honor Book for the Childrens's Book Council of Australia Book of the Year, older readers. Wendy Orr's other books have also received various awards. Nim's Island was filmed with Jodie Foster , Abigail Breslin and Gerard Butler , German title: Die Insel der Abenteuer , 2008, second episode 2013 was called: Return to Nim's Island (German: The return to the island of adventure ).
