Vera Pavlovna Janowa ( Russian Вера Павловна Янова ; born September 21 . Jul / 4. October  1907 greg. In Włocławek ; † 13. September 2004 in St. Petersburg ) was a Russian - Soviet painter .

Life

Janowa's father was the engineer PN Janow, who was building a railway bridge in Włocławek when she was born. In 1915 the family returned to Petrograd . Janowa graduated from the St. Petersburg Alexander Girls' High School (now School No. 211) and then studied architecture at the Leningrad Civil Engineering Institute (LISI) . NA Tyrsa was one of their teachers.

In 1927 Janowa married the painter and graphic artist Georgi Nikolajewitsch Traugott (1903–1961), who after studying at the Russian Art Academy had become a member of the Association of Artists of the Vchutein Students. So it came to a creative collaboration between Janowa and Traugott with AI Rusakow , GM Nemenowa , TI Kuperwasser and ND Emeljanow from this group. Janowa and Traugott also became friends of the artist Vladimir Lebedew and the poet Daniil Charms . Janowa kept painting and approached her husband's work. The subjects were often landscapes and also the kolkhoz .

During the Leningrad blockade , Janova stayed in Leningrad, served in a demining brigade and painted cityscapes, portraits , self-portraits and made graphics . During this time she was close friends with the artists TN Glebova and AW Shchekotichina-Pototskaya , third wife of the painter IJ Bilibin .

After the war , Janova resolutely went her own way and refused to accept socialist realism . She did not join any artist organization and did not take part in exhibitions. She refrained from entering into compromises, as would have been necessary when entering the painting department of the Leningrad Artists' Association , and from going underground in opposition to the government. She worked until the end of her life. The only thing that changed was her technique, now mainly creating gouaches and watercolors . Since the 1950s, she has shown her works at neighborhood exhibitions. Publications of her works began in the 2000s. Her works are in private collections in France , Italy and Russia . The first solo exhibition of Janowa's works took place from August to October 2012 in the St. Petersburg Russian Museum .

Janowa's son Valeri Traugot became an illustrator . Janowas brothers were the TASS - Correspondent NP Janow (1903-1982) and the artist KP Janow (1905-1996).
