Verkhovna ( Ukrainian Верхівня ; Russian Верховня Verkhovna , Polish Wierzchownia ) is a village in the Ukrainian Oblast Zhytomyr with about 1000 inhabitants (2001).
geography
Verkhivna is the administrative center of the eponymous, 55.116 km² district council in the northeast of Ruschyn Rajon , to which the village of Mussijiwka ( Мусіївка , ⊙ ) with about 350 inhabitants belongs.
The village is located on 205 m height on the banks of Postil ( Постіл ), a 31 km long tributary of Ros -Zuflusses Rostawyzja ( Роставиця ), 15 km north-east of Rajonzentrum Ruzhyn and 79 km southeast of the Oblastzentrum Zhytomyr .
In the village there is a park created by the Polish baron Wacław Hański, complete with stately buildings.
history
The village, first mentioned in writing in 1600, was visited in 1847 by the French writer Honoré de Balzac . In 1833 he met Countess Ewelina Hańska , who had been widowed since 1841 and who owned an estate in the village, in Switzerland and was on friendly terms with her ever since. Balzac wrote here, among other things, to La Maratre , Les Paysans and part of the unfinished La comédie humaine (German: The human comedy ) as well as A letter about Kiev , a travelogue about a trip to the Ukraine. On February 2, 1848, Balzac left for France and at the end of September 1848 returned to Ewelina Hańska's estate to marry her. The marriage was concluded on March 14, 1850 in Berdychiv and in May 1850 the couple finally left Verkhivna for Paris.
An asteroid discovered by the Andruschiwka observatory on October 8, 2005 was named Verkhivnya (155116) in honor of Balzac's stay and in honor of the village .
