Werner Böckenförde

Werner Böckenförde (born March 21, 1928 in Hilders ; † November 26, 2003 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a German Catholic theologian , lawyer and cathedral chapter .

Life

Böckenförde was the second son of forester Josef Böckenförde and his wife Gertrud. The former judge of the Federal Constitutional Court Ernst-Wolfgang Böckenförde is his brother. He studied theology in Münster and Paderborn , combined with a second degree in law . In Münster he became a member of the K.St.V. Marcomannia in KV . In 1956 he received his doctorate in law , and on June 5, 1957 he was ordained a priest by Archbishop Lorenz Jaeger in Paderborn. In 1969 he received his doctorate in theology.

After completing his theology studies, Böckenförde became a research assistant to Joseph Höffner in Münster, followed by another assistant to Joseph Ratzinger in Bonn and Münster. In 1969 Böckenförde entered the service of the Limburg diocese . In 1971 the local bishop Wilhelm Kempf appointed him his personal advisor; he held the office until 1981. In addition, he headed the legal department of the diocese from 1972 until his retirement in 1993. In 1976 he became a member of the episcopal cathedral chapter. At the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main he also taught from 1976 as an honorary professor of Catholic canon law and state church law .

Werner Böckenförde was buried on December 6, 2003 in the canon cemetery in Limburg.
