Georg Bier (born June 2, 1959 in Düsseldorf ) is a German Roman Catholic theologian and canon lawyer . He is Professor of Canon Law at the University of Freiburg .

Life

Bier studied Catholic theology and mathematics at the University of Bonn from 1979 to 1985 and graduated with the first state examination for teaching at secondary levels II / I. In 1990 the doctorate to Dr. theol. with a dissertation on the topic of "Psychosexual Deviations and Marriage Nullity" (Supervisor: Hubert Müller ). He also worked as a pastoral consultant (1991) in the Diocese of Osnabrück , at the same time examining magistrate and defender of marriage bonds (1992) at the Episcopal Office of Osnabrück, until he obtained the "Licentiate in Canon Law" at the University of Münster in 1994 with a dissertation on "Problems of Application of the dolus in case law ”(Supervisor: Klaus Lüdicke ).

From 1993 to 2004 Georg Bier was a diocesan judge at the Episcopal Office of Limburg. In 2001 he completed his habilitation in the subject of canon law at the Catholic theological faculty of the University of Bonn with the thesis “The legal status of the diocesan bishop according to the Codex Iuris Canonici of 1983” (supervisor: Norbert Lüdecke ).

After teaching positions in Frankfurt and Giessen, he succeeded Hartmut Zapp as full professor for canon law and ecclesiastical legal history at the theological faculty of the University of Freiburg, where he was also dean of studies from 2006 to 2014.

In 2008, Bier received the University Teaching Award from the University of Freiburg.

Georg Bier is married and has three children.
