On July 1, 2008, he was appointed Episcopal Vicar by Bishop Vitus Huonder for the coordination of the diocese leadership and the foundation system in the Diocese of Chur . He is also vice-official and resident canon in Chur and diocesan judge in the Archdiocese of Vaduz . He was called to serve as a consultor to the Congregation for the Clergy and to the Church-State Commission of the Swiss Bishops' Conference . On December 8, 2009, Bishop Vitus Huonder appointed him vicar general for the diocese of Chur. This office expired with the acceptance of the resignation of the bishop and the resulting vacancy in the diocese of Chur. However, the Apostolic Administrator Pierre Bürcher appointed Grichting as his delegate and moderator of the diocesan curia .

Pope Benedict XVI appointed him on January 15, 2011 to the papal honorary prelate . Grichting is honorary chaplain of the Order of Malta .

In his 2018 book On Your Own Name, On Your Own Responsibility - A Catholic Answer to Pluralism , in times of digitalization and globalization he pleads for a new definition of relationships and more separation between church and state. In his opinion, religious communities represent absolute truths, whereas the secular state is determined by democracy, equal treatment and the rule of law. The church should therefore reflect on its core mission of conveying the faith. The implementation in family, work and politics can often look different. Christianity, however, provided important prerequisites and indispensable values such as human dignity, charity and peace for the community, which the state and its institutions cannot provide and guarantee themselves.
