Werner Beck (engineer)

Werner Beck (born July 28, 1907 in Paramaribo ; † October 24, 1994 in Freiberg ) was a German mechanical engineer and university professor.

Life

Beck was born in Paramaribo, where his father worked for a mission company. In 1913 the family went on vacation to Germany; Werner Beck stayed there and grew up with relatives in Lusatia . From 1914 to 1918 he attended the middle elementary school in Herrnhut , he passed the Abitur in 1926 in the upper secondary school in Bautzen . He then studied mechanical engineering at the TH Dresden until 1931 . After obtaining his diploma, he worked for a short time in the technical office of the Carl Jastram engine factory in Hamburg .

From 1932 to 1935 he worked as an assistant to Otto Emil Fritzsche at the Institute for Machine Science of the Freiberg Mining Academy . Then he took a job at the Dessau Junkers aircraft and engine works . In 1937 he joined the NSDAP . In the same year he became a Dr.-Ing. At the Bergakademie Freiberg. doctorate, but he continued to work for the Junkers factories. From March 1938 to July 1939 he did military service.

In 1946, Werner Beck and other Junkers experts were forced to work in aircraft construction in the USSR . He first worked for three years in Tushino , then for four years in Kuibyshev and one year in Zavyolovo . One focus of his research was the drive of propeller turbines, u. a. for the four-engine Ilyushin Il-18 .

In 1954 the Bergakademie Freiberg appointed him lecturer for fluid mechanics at the Institute for Mechanical Engineering. In 1958 he was appointed professor, and in 1969 he was appointed professor for hydraulic and pneumatic drives. In 1972 he retired. Ten years later he accepted a teaching position in Suriname . After German reunification he returned to Freiberg, where he held lectures until shortly before his death.

Werner Beck died in Freiberg in 1994. His grave is in the Donatsfriedhof . In 2007, the Freiberg University Library commemorated Beck's 100th birthday with an exhibition.
