Werner Berthold (historian)

Werner Berthold (born September 15, 1923 in Leipzig ; † April 8, 2017 ) was a German historian .

Life

Werner Berthold came from Leipzig, where he attended elementary school from 1929 . He left this in 1937 and began training in the graphic industry, which lasted until 1940. The following year he began to take part in World War II and was taken prisoner by the French. In 1947 he was released and attended the next three years at the University of Leipzig , the Workers 'and Peasants' Faculty .

In 1950, Berthold finally began to study history, philosophy , political economy and adult education at the university. After four years he finished his studies. In 1960 he also became a doctor phil. PhD . His dissertation is entitled "... starve and obey". On the emergence and political function of the historical ideology of West German imperialism. Investigated using the example of Gerhard Ritter and Friedrich Meinecke . In that year he also began to work as a senior assistant and lecturer at the Institute for German History. He was promoted to awareness lecturer for German history in 1963 and in 1967 also for historiography and methodology of historiography based on the text Marxist History Image , Popular Front and Anti-Fascist-Democratic Revolution. Habilitated on the prehistory of GDR historical studies and on the conception of the history of the German people .

The philosophical faculty hired Berthold in 1968 as lecturer for these subjects. The next year he was promoted to associate professor . Since then he has taught the theory, methodology and history of historical science. At the same time he was also appointed deputy director for research in the history section. He remained in this position until the following year and has held the full professorship since 1973.

In 1979 Berthold was honored with the National Prize, Second Class . He gave up the professorship in 1988. Since then he has worked as a freelance journalist and historian. He also held his traineeship at the Institute for the History of Germany at the university and was a lecturer at the adult education center in Leipzig .
