Werner Giers

Werner Giers (born November 14, 1928 in Hamm , Westphalia ; † April 8, 2016 in Graefelfing ) was a German newspaper journalist.

Life

At the age of 31 he became editor-in-chief of the regional newspaper group Zeitungsverlagsgesellschaft Nordwestdeutschland (Zeno), today's newspaper group Münsterland (ZGM), and later also of Westfälische Nachrichten . In 1982 the Westphalian publisher Dirk Ippen took over the subscription newspaper Münchner Merkur and in 1983 appointed Giers as editor-in-chief and co-editor of the paper. He succeeded Paul Pucher , who was regarded as loyal to the CSU , and held the position until 1995. Under his aegis , the newspaper's circulation increased. He succeeded in economically integrating the Upper Bavarian local newspapers acquired by the Ippen Group under a new umbrella company. In terms of content, his focus was on tax and agricultural policy .

The cigar smoker was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class , the Bavarian Order of Merit , the Bavarian Constitutional Medal and the Savings Lion of the Association of Taxpayers . He was particularly popular as a guest speaker at farmers' meetings. The Süddeutsche Zeitung quoted one of his hearty slogans in its obituary: "Put pressure on the beneficiaries and Schwaflern in politics!"
