Werner Gothein

Werner Gothein (born March 8, 1890 in Karlsruhe , † June 2, 1968 in Unteruhldingen ) was a German visual artist .

Life

Werner Gothein - son of Eberhard Gothein and his wife Marie Luise Gothein , brother of Percy Gothein and nephew of Georg Gothein - grew up in Bonn and from 1904 in Heidelberg . His father taught first at the University of Bonn and then at the University of Heidelberg .

In 1912 Werner Gothein got to know the works of Ernst Ludwig Kirchner at an exhibition and thereupon became one of two students at the MUIM Institute in Berlin . Kirchner and Max Pechstein founded this educational institution with the full name of Modern Painting Lessons . Gothein learned painting , sculpture and woodcut techniques .

Gothein was able to develop his own artistic position in 1918 with a pastel work on Georg Büchner's Woyzeck and in this way break away from his teacher Kirchner. Around 1920 he devoted himself to the designs for ceramic objects that were realized between 1924 and 1936 in the state majolica factory in Karlsruhe and the stoneware factory in Velten-Vordamm .

Werner Gothein lived in Unteruhldingen from 1945, where he made woodcuts. He had been friends with Wilhelm Fraenger since his time in Heidelberg .
