Werner Irmler

Werner Irmler (born April 15, 1930 in Kühnau ) was from 1965 to 1990 head of the Central Evaluation and Information Group (ZAIG) of the Ministry for State Security (MfS).

Childhood and youth

Irmler was born in 1930 in Kühnau, today's Chynow ( Silesia ). His father was a machine shaper, his mother a housewife. After graduating from elementary school, Irmler began training as a businessman in 1944. After the end of the war he moved to the Soviet occupation zone and began an apprenticeship as a forestry worker in 1946. He completed this in 1948. In the same year Irmler became a member of the SED and accepted a post as assistant forester . Between 1950 and 1951 he attended the forestry college and learned the profession of forester . In 1951 he became a member of the Ministry for Land and Forest Brandenburg , then a forest instructor in Zehdenick .

Stasi career

At the age of 22, Irmler joined the MfS in 1952. There he initially worked in the economics department of the Potsdam district administration . In 1953 he was transferred to the investigation department (main department IX) in Berlin . There he worked as an investigator. From 1955 to 1956 he attended the district party school before he was appointed head of the information department in 1957. In 1959 he was promoted to deputy head of the central evaluation and information group. From 1960, he completed a correspondence course at the University of the Ministry of State Security , which he in 1965 along with another captain with a thesis on " The analysis of the information flow in the Single System of political-operational analysis and information activities of the Stasi " as diploma - lawyer graduated . In September 1965 Irmler was appointed head of the central evaluation and information group (successor to Robert Korb ). In 1970 he received his doctorate at the University of the Ministry of State Security to Dr. jur. with a thesis on " The further development and qualification of prognostic activity as part of the system of management and management activity in the Ministry of State Security ". In 1982 he was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in gold. In 1987 he was promoted to lieutenant general. On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the GDR, Irmler was entrusted with the “preventive prevention of oppositional activities”. In the course of the dissolution of the MfS, Irmler was released from his position in December 1989 and released in January 1990.

Life after 1990

Since his discharge from the service of the MfS, Irmler has lived as a pensioner. In March 2001 Irmler signed an open letter in which 23 high-ranking former MfS officers denounced the “witch hunt” on former State Security employees in the young world . Together with Stasi colonels Reinhard Grimmer , Willi Opitz and Wolfgang Schwanitz , he published the two-volume justification in 2002, " Security - On the Defense Work of the Stasi ", which Karl Wilhelm Fricke classified as part of the history revisionism of Stasi cadres.
