Werner Jobst

Werner Jobst (born January 12, 1945 in Tschachoritsch ) is an Austrian classical archaeologist .

Life

From 1963 to 1969 Jobst studied classical archeology and classical philology at the universities of Vienna and Munich . After receiving his doctorate in 1969 as a Dr. phil. from 1969 to 1970 he was contract assistant at the Austrian Archaeological Institute . From 1970 to 1977 he was a university assistant at the Institute for Classical Archeology at the University of Vienna. After completing his habilitation in Classical Archeology in 1976, Werner Jobst was senior assistant at the Austrian Archaeological Institute from 1977 to 1985 and taught at the universities of Vienna, Salzburg and Graz as a university lecturer. In 1985 he became an associate university professor and real councilor of the Lower Austrian provincial government. Since 1964 he has participated in excavations at home and abroad (Magdalensberg, Salzburg, Carnuntum, Ephesos, Erythrai, Constantinople) and led various excavation and research projects (Carnuntum, Salzburg, Ephesos, Erythrai, Constantinople). Since 1985 he has been the regional archaeologist of Lower Austria and director of the Carnuntum Archaeological Park. In 1974 he became a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute , in 1991 a corresponding member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences .

In geographical terms, his research focuses on the landscapes of Anatolia , Noricum and Pannonia , especially the cities of Ephesus , Constantinople and Carnuntum . With regard to archaeological finds and findings, he focuses on ancient fibulae and mosaics as well as Roman cults and shrines. In addition, Jobst deals with topics of archaeological preservation, the presentation of archaeological sites and museology.
