Werner Knaust

Werner Knaust (born November 3, 1924 ) is a former German soccer player and soccer coach. From 1954 to 1956 he played for Einheit Ost / Rotation Leipzig in the GDR Oberliga , the top division in GDR football . He then worked as a coach for various teams, including the second-rate GDR league .

Athletic career

Until the end of the 1953/54 season Werner Knaust played in the football team of the company sports community (BSG) unit in Arnstadt , most recently in the third-rate district league . For the 1954/55 season he moved to the league promoted BSG Einheit Ost Leipzig , which was integrated into the newly founded SC Rotation Leipzig during the season. Knaust was used in all 26 league games and usually played as a central defender. This season, Knaust also scored his only top division goal on matchday five for BSG Einheit Ost in a 1-0 win against Motor Zwickau . When a transition round with 13 games was played in the fall of 1955 to transition to the calendar season, Knaust was only missing in one encounter. At the age of 31 he started his last league season in March 1956, in which he again played all 26 point games in his regular position. After having worked as a district coach in Suhl for a few years, he took over the second-rate East German league team from Motor Eisenach in the second half of the 1965/66 season . At the end of the season he led Eisenach from 13th to 11th place. In 1967 he reached 11th place with the team again. When Motor Eisenach landed on the penultimate place in the table at the end of the first half of the 1967/68 season , Knaust had to give up his position. In the summer of 1968 he took over the GDR league promoted Kali Werra Tiefenort , with whom he just managed to stay in the league at the end of the 1968/69 season . He then moved again to a newcomer in the GDR league. At Motor Nordhausen-West he worked as a coach for two seasons and achieved his best result as a coach in the 1970/71 season with third place in the north houses. Nevertheless, he made another change and was coach of the second team of FC Karl-Marx-Stadt for the 1971/72 season . He immediately led the reserve from the district league to the GDR league, where it reached eighth place out of twelve teams in 1973 . A season later, the Karl-Marx-Städter descended under Knaust back into the district league. After that, Knaust no longer appeared in the higher-class leagues.
