Werner Lange (born July 18, 1936 ) is a former German soccer player .

Player career

Werner Lange took his first steps in football at the Reinickendorfer club RFC Libertas , which he left for Wacker 04 Berlin at the age of 13 . There he was promoted to the first team at the age of 18. After he still had problems getting used to in his first league season, he fought for a regular place in the second season. His good performance did not go unnoticed by those responsible at Hertha BSC and so he moved to Gesundbrunnen in 1956.

With the blue-whites, Lange introduced himself very well when he scored 3-2 against Union 06 in the 85th minute on matchday 1 . Even though he scored four more goals over the course of the season, his main task as a winger was mainly to provide the center forward with crosses. Lange managed to do this extremely well, so that in Helmut Faeder (18 goals), Klaus Taube (14) and Horst Thiel (11) three of his teammates scored double digits. In the end, it was this strong series of storms that led Herthan to the Berlin championship before Tennis Borussia . As a result, the final round of the German championship in 1957 was reached, in which with a 1:14 debacle at 1. FC Kaiserslautern all chances of advancing had to be buried right at the beginning. The Berliners had already been in the front after ten minutes with a goal from Lange. Then the games against Kickers Offenbach (1: 3) and Borussia Dortmund (1: 2) were lost.

Hertha BSC did not recover from this shock for a long time and so they also ran after the opponents in the everyday business of the Oberliga and usually had nothing to do with the awarding of the title. It was only in the 1960/61 season that Tasmania 1900 could be distanced and the title win celebrated. In the final round of the German championship in 1961 , the team trained by Hanne Sobek could not keep up with the national competition. Only at 1. FC Köln could a 4-3 victory be achieved, in which Lange scored two goals. In the last game against the eventual German champions 1. FC Nürnberg , it was Lange who made a huge contribution to the second point win thanks to his late equalizer to make it 3: 3.

In 1961/62, however, Hertha missed defending their title and this time had to give up Tasmania. But the tables were turned around in the following season thanks to a sensational 41 goals from Hans-Joachim Altendorff . This allowed the Berliners to take part in the 1963 DM finals , in which they met Kaiserslautern at the beginning. A long hit from the 57th minute was equalized immediately. The group stage was finished third and so again missed the final.

When the 1st Bundesliga was introduced in 1963 and Hertha was named as a founding member, Lange left the old lady because he decided to work as a firefighter and against a professional career. At Hertha BSC he played 136 games in the major league, which puts him in fourth place in the club's internal ranking behind Günter Schüler (223), Helmut Faeder (218) and Hans-Günter Schimmöller (181).

So he moved to Spandauer SV in the Regionalliga Berlin . There, with 122 missions, he was a constant for six years. Since the club never played upstairs, Werner Lange disappeared completely from the orbit of the B national team , where he was a few times in the extended circle. In 1969 Werner Lange ended his football career and concentrated completely on his work as a firefighter.
