Werner Mertes

Werner Josef Karl Mertes (born November 21, 1919 in Bövinghausen ; † April 6, 1985 in Bonn ) was a German economist and politician ( FDP / DVP ).

Life and work

After attending elementary school, the humanistic boarding school and graduating from high school in Bad Ems in 1940 , Mertes was drafted into the Wehrmacht . From 1940 to 1945 he took part in the Second World War as a soldier , was deployed on the Eastern Front and in 1942 was appointed lieutenant in the reserve. He suffered three wounds during the course of the war.

As a working student, Mertes began studying law, political science and economics at the Technical University of Stuttgart in 1946 , which he completed in 1949 with an examination for a degree in economics. He then worked for a short time in companies and at the DGB Württemberg-Baden . At the end of 1949 he switched to Süddeutscher Rundfunk (SDR) as a business editor, where he was head of business radio until 1971. In 1971 he was initially managing director of the pipeline operating company and since 1975 was managing director of the industrial management company in Bonn - Bad Godesberg .

Political party

Mertes joined the FDP / DVP in 1953 and was elected chairman of the Stuttgart district association. He was also a member of the FDP / DVP state committee and the FDP federal committee for economics. From 1972 to 1977 he was a member of the Advisory Board of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation .

MP

Mertes was a member of the German Bundestag from 1961 to 1976 . He was always drawn into parliament via the state list of the FDP Baden-Württemberg . Since 1964 he was the parliamentary managing director of the FDP parliamentary group. From 1969 to 1972 he acted as deputy chairman of the Bundestag committee for election review, immunity and rules of procedure.

Honors

Mertes was awarded the Great Cross of Merit with Star (1973) and Shoulder Ribbon (1976) from the Federal Republic of Germany. He was made an honorary doctorate (Dr. hc).
