life and work

Werner Pawlok founded his first studio in Esslingen am Neckar in 1977 as an autodidact and in the same year he worked at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart under Professor Albrecht Ade . In 1979 he founded a photo gallery with the PP Gallery in Esslingen, which exhibited numerous internationally known artists, including Gerhard Vormwald and Jim Rakete . In 1984 Pawlok moved into a new studio in Stuttgart. In the same year, the “Fashion in East Berlin” project was created in collaboration with the fashion designer Helmut Lang . The motifs were published in the magazines Wiener and Style and the family tunes, among others . In 1985, Pawlok was hired to produce an exhibition for Kodak . In 1986 Pawlok presented the series Around the World in 40 Days at the Photokina, which was created on a trip around the world, and was commissioned by Stern for a photo series “Moscow-New York”. In 1988 the first works of his “Photography Paintings” were created as Polaroid transfers.

In 1988 he moved into his studio in Tribeca , New York City, and in the same year photographed the performance artist Leigh Bowery .

In 1989 he returned to Germany and in the same year created a series of Polaroids of Mercedes-Benz classics on behalf of the automobile manufacturer.

Pawlok first drew attention to himself in the late 1980s through his work with the 50x60 Polaroid instant camera . With his “Photography Paintings”, Pawlok combines the fields of painting and photography; his “transfers” show faces and flowers in large-format polaroids that have been transferred to hand-made paper or canvas. In 1989, Gunter Sachs bought Pawlok's first works for his art collection. In the series “Crying Animals”, among other things, the portrait of a monkey in the gesture of the crucified was put on gold leaf, followed by a series of animal portraits of endangered species, some of which were auctioned by Sotheby's for the benefit of nature and animal protection WWF .

In 1990 he began his extensive series of works, Stars & Paints ; 100 large-format Polaroid portraits of world-famous personalities, including Sir Peter Ustinov , John Malkovich , Roman Polański , Dizzy Gillespie , Jean Paul Gaultier, Juliette Binoche and Jane Birkin .

In 1996 he created his picture cycle Dantes Commedia , an interpretation of the Divine Comedy written by Dante Alighieri in the 14th century . For the first time, Pawlok created the entire series of images, which includes 33 exhibits, with the help of digital image processing.

In 2000 he traveled through Europe to photograph stars for UNICEF , portraits of European stars such as Ewan McGregor , Patricia Kaas , Andrzej Wajda , Nacho Duato and others.

In 2002, Pawlok began with the picture cycle views - faces of literature , a series of portraits by writers such as Martin Walser , TC Boyle , Henning Mankell , Amos Oz , Jonathan Franzen , Richard Ford , Salman Rushdie , Ian Rankin , Ken Follett , Armin Mueller-Stahl , Ian McEwan , Michael Ondaatje , Siri Hustvedt , Leon de Winter , Jeffrey Eugenides and others.

In 2004 and 2013 he traveled to Cuba and photographed his series “Cuba - expired” in Havana. The pictures in which Werner Pawlok tells of the morbid charm of an old Caribbean metropolis will soon themselves show a piece of history. The splendor and misery of the Cuban utopia, the projecto cubano, nowhere more clearly merge than in the abandoned palaces of the old sugar aristocracy. Pawlok is hot on the heels of this sunken world on his forays into Havana.
