Werner Pflugbeil (born July 2, 1925 , † November 8, 1975 in Schneeberg (Ore Mountains) ) was a German ethnographer and folk artist from the Ore Mountains .

Life

After several years of activity from 1947 as a miner , excavator and from 1948 to 1953 as an underground carpenter for the SDAG Wismut , he took over the management of the museum for on January 1, 1954 on the recommendation of the then head of the State Museum of Folk Art in Dresden , Reinhold Langner Mining folk art in Schneeberg and its content reorientation. He developed the museum into a collection center for Ore Mountain carvings. Werner Pflugbeil organized countless exhibitions in conjunction with the Schneeberger Natur- und Heimatfreunde and the Kulturbund der GDR and contributed significantly to the maintenance of the Ore Mountains customs, especially the long-standing mining traditions in Schneeberg. In addition, he worked closely with the schools in his hometown to give young people access to local studies.

Even as a teenager he carved in his spare time, after having acquired basic knowledge from the master carvers Joseph Grippner and Gustav Rössel. In 1953, Pflugbeil took over the management of the woodcarving specialist group “ Mallets and Iron ” in Schneeberg and, from 1959, also headed the pioneer carving circle. With his help, the Schneeberg Christmas pyramid and the redesign of the miner's fountain "Neuer Anbruch", built in 1935, were created. He is u. a. We also owe the enrichment of the museum with the famous Schneeberger Heimatberg , which still has its traditional place on the upper floor of the building. A second version of this Heimatberg is in the Museum of Folk Art in Dresden.

At the age of 40, he took up distance learning, which he completed in 1970 as a graduate ethnographer. Shortly after his 50th birthday, he died of a heart condition.
