List of place pyramids in the Erzgebirgskreis

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Oldest preserved town pyramid from 1934 in Schwarzenberg

The list of local pyramids in the Erzgebirgskreis offers an overview of the current and former rotating pyramids in the cities and communities of the Erzgebirgskreis in public places. The Christmas pyramids , originally made for domestic use, are an integral part of the customs in the Saxon Ore Mountains and have also been made as large outdoor pyramids since the 1930s. In many places, the pyramid pushing is celebrated annually around the First Advent . Most pyramids rotate until the new year , in some places until Candlemas .

Current location pyramids

The oldest surviving local pyramid that is still in operation, the Krauss pyramid , was set up in Schwarzenberg in 1935 , but had previously been shown for the first time in 1934 on the occasion of the nativity scene in Aue . The city of Aue then had its own pyramid made and placed it on the market square in 1935; it is still in use.

The following table provides an overview of the large pyramids existing within the boundaries of the Erzgebirge District, which were erected on municipal land by the cities and municipalities with their approval or on their initiative.

2008 The construction of a pyramid was suggested back in 2005 by the Adorfer Association for Local and Local History. The 6.4 meter high rod pyramid, with an impeller diameter of three meters, has four turntables with figures more than 20 to 80 centimeters high. The shape of the hood under the impeller is based on the arch architecture of the Adorfer School and the Klaffenbach moated castle .
Various topics are presented on the four levels: at the bottom the local history, which includes settlers and a monk, as Adorf's development was closely linked to the Chemnitz monastery . The Christmas story is shown above it. On the third plate the figures symbolize local handicrafts and trades and a Santa Claus can also be seen. At the top, a carourer does her laps.

Every year around the 1st Advent, people who dress up like the pyramid figures go on a man march accompanied by the fire brigade music train from the inn to the pyramid and then the pyramid is pushed. This festival attracts hundreds of guests from the area every year.

The motifs are u. a. Mountain elevator, bismuth miners, rabbit breeders, traders, mushroom pickers and tourist. After all the figures on the bottom plate l fell victim at Christmas 1992/93 , the members of the carving association made eleven figures in 1993 for a previously missing motif with the birth of Christ in the stable. In this context, the entire pyramid was restored and a total of 23 figures, including the lowest turntable, were repositioned. The last general overhaul to date took place in 2009.

1978 With the help of a model, which is exhibited today in the “Preßnitztalmuseum”, interested carvers convinced the council of the community at the time of their idea of building a local pyramid. The building material that the carvers used for the original figures is remarkable: since linden wood was rare, the figures were made from two-component pure foam using casting molds.
Children's motifs can be seen on the upper pyramid plate: one child puts the carrot in a snowman's face, a second feeds birds and the third goes skiing. In the middle, the typical Erzgebirge figures of miners, foundries, blacksmiths and wood makers can be seen. The lower plate has been dividing the community for years. 1980 Schwibbogen with pyramid rotating mechanism. The steel Schwibbogen with the silhouettes of two trees was made by a blacksmith from Zschopau, the rest of the work was done by Ernst Hunger and colleagues from the district council after work. On the plate were the figures of angel, nutcracker, miner and smoker. The figures were carved from wood from old telegraph poles, which was due to the scarcity economy at the time they were built.

After a renovation of the pyramid in Vorderschlößchen was originally planned, but was postponed due to a priority search for a new installation location, the pyramid slewing gear in Hinterschlößchen was revised as an alternative from May 2016 . Ernst Hunger and Siegbert Seyberth from the Amtsberger Schnitzverein replaced the original plate and the figures with two turntables with the motif of the birth of Christ. The three kings turn over Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus in the manger as well as shepherds with sheep and a donkey.

1981 The figures of the pyramid are all local originals, including Marga Gründig, the good soul from village consumption, Epperlein Karl with accordion, sheep shearer Otto Vogel and mini farmer Heinz Gottschalk with horse and cart.

Since even older residents sometimes only know the background to the characters from stories, they wanted new characters. The drafts for this were already ready in spring 2016, but were not carried out. The previous installation location can no longer be used as of Christmas 2016/17 due to a construction project. We are currently looking for a new location. Since the limewood for the figures had already been purchased, the Schwibbogen with pyramid in the back pelvis was revised without further ado.

Comments on the special role of the "toy village" Seiffen

As early as 1650, wood turners based in Seiffen were first mentioned in a document who produced everyday objects. Wooden toys were also made early on. From 1760 so-called "Seiffen goods" were traded across Europe, and from 1784 they were also exported overseas. The timber industry developed into the dominant branch of business until the first half of the 19th century.

At the beginning of the 1930s there were efforts to create a central advertising exhibition for regional wood products. In 1936 the Seiffen toy advertising show opened in the state toy technical school established in 1852 , and based on this, the local history and toy museum was set up in 1953 . For advertising purposes, regional manufacturers also use - and still do today - mostly oversized individual items in weatherproof outdoor versions at the local production and sales facilities. - The same goes for Christmas pyramids.

The first pyramid in town that is visible to the public at Christmas time is a 9.35 meter high copy at Hauptstrasse 139. It advertised VEB VERO and was built by employees at the time in their spare time. A room variant produced by the company served as a design template. It was erected for the first time in 1970, and since 1974 this pyramid has been standing all year round. It has been privately owned since 1989. The second, constantly visible and advertising pyramid stands in front of the “pyramid house” near the town hall. Since the political turnaround in particular, further, commercial outdoor pyramids have been added.

The only non-commercial open-air pyramid in town to date is on the forecourt of the “Seiffen wooden toy maker and turner school”.

Former and / or no longer existing pyramids

First place pyramid of the Ore Mountains in Frohnau

Until the 1930s, Christmas pyramids were exclusively domestic Christmas decorations with a special place in their owners' living rooms. According to tradition, the last retired Frohnauer Steiger Traugott Pollmer had the idea of erecting a "pyramid for everyone" outdoors as early as 1926. After Pollmer's death in 1928, the Frohnau wood carving association, with the help of local craftsmen, including the art carver Paul Schneider , and the local council took care of this project . In 1931 the construction of a wooden outdoor pyramid began by the master wheelwright Oscar Weber and his son Gerhard in his workshop in the house Sehmatalstrasse 10 next to the Frohnauer Hammer (today Langs Erzgebirgshaus ). On December 17, 1933, it was inaugurated and handed over to the community in the presence of many residents, the school children's choir and two choirs. It is considered the first town pyramid in the Ore Mountains and stood in front of the Frohnau municipal office.

The four-story pyramid was 4.75 meters high and was electrically operated and illuminated. It was painted white and blue and the edges were bronzed. Painted flat figures - figures cut out of boards with carved, broken edges - formed her jewelry. On the lower floor camels and camel drivers turned, on the second the birth of Christ with the three kings was depicted. On the third floor were shepherds with their sheep and above them figures from the mining industry. Music-making angels also turned in the crown.

The pyramid was dismantled just two years after its inauguration, which was probably due to the political circumstances. The chairman of the carving club - a local policeman in professional life - was transferred. There was also a dispute between supporters of the NSDAP and the predominantly SPD sympathizers in the club, whereupon the carvers involved in the construction are said to have taken their figures home with them. The remaining parts were stored. Nothing is known about its whereabouts.

From May 2012, a working group made up of members of the Frohnau carving association “Paul Schneider”, regional crafts and supported by the city of Annaberg-Buchholz, began work on a replica on a reduced scale. In September 2012, the faithful replica was presented on the Day of the Saxons in Freiberg and in 2013 on the festival day in Schwarzenberg. It can be admired in Annaberg town hall every Christmas time.

Bermsgrün
( Schwarzenberg / Erzgeb. )
As early as 1958, the Bermsgrüner Schnitzer community under the direction of Harry Schmidt erected a four-meter-high rod pyramid with the theme "Life in the Erzgebirge Village" outdoors. The special thing about the design was the choice of materials for the frame and figures, which consisted of untreated branch material. It was the only branch pyramid made from natural birch trunks until then . At the beginning of the 1970s, this model was replaced by a spruce branch wood pyramid, which was designed with cones and branches of coniferous trees. Apparently, due to the shorter shelf life of such untreated materials, the existence of this pyramid was also limited. In 1980 it was no longer there.

The four-story, 3.5-meter-high storey pyramid with a total of 20 figures was built between 1962 and 1964. The frame parts of the storeys were designed in the form of tunnel mouth holes and consist of boards clad with linden bark. The Holy Family was originally supposed to find its place in the stable on the lowest floor, but this was undesirable on the part of local politics at the time. Instead, forest workers were placed. Miners come on top and on top a shepherd does his laps with sheep.

During the Advent and Christmas season in 2000 it turned for the last time in Cunersdorf, after which it was stored. In 2004, a contact was established between Volker Krämer, chairman of the local wood carving association, and Tina Peschel, research assistant at the Berlin Museum of European Cultures . A large pyramid from the Ore Mountains was sought for the museum, whereupon Krämer offered the stored Cunersdorfer pyramid. The wood carving association subjected the pyramid to a general overhaul, the costs incurred were borne by the Association of Friends of the Museum of European Cultures . In 2011, the museum bought the pyramid. It was shown to the public for the first time in Berlin as part of the exhibition Christmas pyramids - tradition and modernity (2012/2013).

The three-tier pyramid had a hexagonal basic shape, inserted panels at the level of the turntable with indirect lighting behind it and a shingle-covered roof. However, nothing is known about their whereabouts.
The carved representations included an Erzgebirge crib with miners and typical Erzgebirge figures. They were created by Max Konczak, who comes from Upper Silesia.
