Werner Schmidt (art historian)
Werner Schmidt (born May 26, 1930 in Pirna ; † July 15, 2010 in Dresden ) was a German art historian and museum director.
After graduating from high school in 1948, he studied art history, classical archeology and German studies first in Leipzig and later at the Humboldt University in Berlin . From 1959 to 1989 he was director of the Dresden Kupferstichkabinett and from 1990 to 1997 general director of the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden .
Schmidt received an honorary doctorate from the Dresden University of Education in 1985 . After the end of his professional activity he received further honors, including the award of the Federal Cross of Merit (1997) and the Commander's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland (1998).
From 1996 to 2002 Schmidt was President of the Saxon Academy of the Arts . At the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts he was a corresponding member of the Department of Fine Arts and Architecture.
In 2008 he donated his extensive private graphic collection to the Pirna City Museum .
On May 15, 2010, he received honorary citizenship in his hometown of Pirna for his commitment to promoting art and culture .
Werner Schmidt lived in Dresden until his death. His grave is in the Loschwitz cemetery .
