Werner Schmidt (forest scientist)

Werner Eugen Heinrich Schmidt (born April 18, 1896 in Heilsberg , East Prussia , † July 15, 1987 in Hamburg-Bergedorf ) was a German forest scientist and university professor .

Life

Born in Heilsberg, Werner Schmidt, son of the pharmacist Bruno Schmidt, devoted himself to studying forest science at the Eberswalde Forestry University and natural sciences at the Albertus University in Königsberg after completing his Abitur , followed by participating in the First World War , before moving to Königsberg in 1924 to the Dr. phil. received his doctorate . Just one year later he completed his habilitation in Eberswalde as a private lecturer in forest science, where he was promoted to associate professor in 1931 and full professor in 1938. In November 1933 he signed the professors' declaration of Adolf Hitler at German universities and colleges . In 1926 Schmidt was entrusted with the management of the forest genetics institute of the forest seed testing institute in Eberswalde. In 1936 he took over the chairmanship of the International Commission for Forest Seed and Climatic Tree Breed Issues, which he held until 1948.

Werner Schmidt, who moved to Hamburg after the Second World War , was subsequently entrusted with the management of the Institute for Forest Plant Breeding in Hamburg-Bergedorf . In addition, he held a visiting professorship at the Baltic University in Pinneberg, which existed from 1946 to 1949 . In 1964 Schmidt retired . Werner Schmidt, who was awarded the Royal Romanian Order of Merit for Culture in 1941, made a name for himself in the fields of timber growing and forest genetics.
