Werner Usbeck (born  February 25, 1920 in Steinbach-Hallenberg ; †  December 10, 2007 in Erfurt ) was a German surgeon . From 1962 to 1985 he was professor and director of the surgical clinic and polyclinic at the Medical Academy in Erfurt and was its rector from 1973 to 1985.

Life

Werner Usbeck was born in Steinbach-Hallenberg in 1920 and finished studying medicine at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena in 1945 , where he also received his doctorate in the same year . He then worked as an assistant doctor at the district hospital in Schmalkalden until 1948 . He then moved to the municipal hospitals in Erfurt , where he worked as a senior physician and completed his training as a specialist in surgery . He also completed another specialization in neurosurgery in 1955 as a specialist. A year later he was at the Medical Academy Erfurt (MAE) habilitation , from 1957 he worked then as a lecturer and since 1962 as an associate and since 1969 as a full professor of surgery at the MAE. He headed the Clinic for Surgery at the Academy, initially on a temporary basis, from 1961. In addition, from 1967 to 1972 he held a chair for surgery at the Academy for Medical Training of the GDR in Berlin-Lichtenberg . From 1973 until his retirement in 1985 he was rector of the Medical Academy in Erfurt.

Werner Usbeck was President of the Society for Neurosurgery from 1968 to 1972 and the Society for Surgery of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) from 1975 to 1977 . He was also a member of the Council of Elders at the Ministry of Health from 1979 to 1985 . In the course of his career he published around 250 scientific publications and 18 contributions to monographs . His scientific and medical interests were particularly focused on visceral surgery , the treatment of traumatic brain injuries and brain tumors in children. Under his supervision, 20 of his employees completed their habilitation. In addition to the honorary title of senior medical officer and honorary senator of the Medical Academy Erfurt, he was awarded honorary membership by 14 national and foreign medical associations, his hometown Steinbach-Hallenberg made him an honorary citizen in 1962. In 1984 he was awarded the Karl Marx Order . He died in 2007 in Erfurt.

Usbeck was a member of the Corps Saxonia Jena .
