Werner Weber (journalist)
Werner Weber (born November 13, 1919 in Huttwil ; † December 1, 2005 in Zurich ) was a Swiss journalist and literary scholar .
Life
Werner Weber was born as the son of a foreman in Huttwil and grew up in Winterthur . He studied literature and art studies at the University of Zurich , where he received his doctorate in 1945 with The Terminology of Viticulture in Northeastern Switzerland and in the Graubünden Rhine Valley .
Weber then worked as a high school teacher in Winterthur until he joined the feature section of the Neue Zürcher Zeitung (NZZ) as an editor in 1946 . From 1951 to 1973 Weber was head of the arts section at the NZZ. During his time at the Neue Zürcher Zeitung he promoted young talents such as Friedrich Dürrenmatt , Max Frisch , Erika Burkart and Hermann Burger .
From 1973 to 1987 Weber was Professor of Literary Studies at the University of Zurich and between 1980 and 1992 Chairman of the Board of Directors of Neue Schauspiel AG in Zurich.
He has written essays and books on poetry and the visual arts since his time as a teacher .
