Werner von Bergen
Friedrich Ludwig Werner von Bergen (born January 20, 1839 in Königsberg , † October 29, 1901 in Wiesbaden ) was an ambassador of the German Empire.
Life
Werner von Bergen was the son of the Prussian government councilor Adolph von Bergen and Auguste Amalie, nee. Wartmann. Bergen studied 1855-1857 jurisprudence , joined the Prussian army one, became a captain promoted, retired at the German war a leg ailment, 1866, taught at the military school in Potsdam and was retired incapacitated. 1868 Von Bergen was drafted into the consular service of the Foreign Office and was initially secretary in Caracas . He married Isabel de Alcalá, who was born in Venezuela . On February 26, 1870, von Bergen was in La Guaira as a debt collection agency in Venezuela and wanted to collect claims from the government of Guillermo Tell Villegas with SMS Niobe and SMS Arcona .
From December 1871 to 1874 Werner von Bergen was consul at Chulalongkorn (Rama V.) King of Siam . In 1872 his son Diego von Bergen was born in Bangkok .
“The not yet 19-year-old King of Siam, who can be described as the country's first gentleman in the best sense of the word, is the bearer of the new ideas, in stark contrast to the traditional politics that finds its expression in the regent. Becoming acquainted with the results of a European administration through his trips to the Dutch and English colonies, the king endeavored to lead his country towards progress. He does not share the Regent's fondness for the English [...] In his endeavors to emancipate himself from the regent's preponderance, who withheld the government from him on the pretext of a lack of age, the support of an agent who opposed English pressures would be welcome. "
From 1874 to 1876, von Bergen was consul general in Saigon . From 1876 to 1883, von Bergen served as Prime Minister for Central America with his official seat in Guatemala City . From 1895 to 1897, von Bergen was Chargé d' affaires for Central America.
In 1876 he concluded friendship, trade, shipping and consular treaties with the Central American Free States of Guatemala and Honduras, thereby promoting the emerging coffee cultivation for export, which destroyed the ejido with a land reform . He had Hans Türckheim and Karl Sapper set up consulates.
Against the Monroe Doctrine , which continued to threaten European trade interests in Central America , von Bergen advised every possible way to improve the atmosphere among the five Central American states and to prepare for economic integration . The imperial envoy from Bergen accused the US government of imperial ambitions in Central America.
In 1877, the Eisenstuck affair with the government of José Vicente Cuadra in Nicaragua escalated from Bergen .
