Werner von Tettingen , also written Tettlingen (* around 1350; † 1413 in Thorn ), was a knight and large area of the Teutonic Order .

origin

Werner came from an old aristocratic family from Hegau with its seat a. a. in Dettingen . Presumably he was the son of Burkard von Tettingen and his wife Fidanne, daughter of the knight Gottfried Mueller of Zurich. After the death of her husband, Fidanne was the prioress of the Oetenbach monastery .

Career in the Teutonic Order

Nothing is known about the early years and his rise in the Teutonic Order. In the years 1384 to 1387 Werner v. T. Komtur von Balga as well as from 1387 to 1390 Supreme Trappier of the order. Werner v. T. held the office of Commander of Christburg from 1390 to 1392 and subsequently the office of Marshal of the Order until 1404 and in 1407 after the death of Grand Master Konrad von Jungingen the important office of governor of the Grand Master . After his resignation as marshal due to illness, he became Komtur von Elbing and at the same time Großspittler . In his capacity as governor of the Grand Master, Tettingen favored the brother of the late Konrad von Jungingen, Ulrich , for the exercise of this office.

In the battle of Tannenberg in 1410, the elderly Werner von Tettingen commanded the commandments of the Commandery and the city of Elbing. As the only major area of the order, he managed to escape from the battlefield near Tannenberg. Due to his old age, he was no longer available for the vacant grand master's office, so he proposed the energetic defender of the Marienburg , Heinrich von Plauen , previously Komtur von Schwetz , for the office of grand master.

After he was elected Grand Master, Werner von Tettingen took part in various diplomatic negotiations with the Kingdom of Poland on behalf of Heinrich von Plauen , during which he died in Thorn in the summer of 1413.

  5. Description of the flags and also of the war events of 1410/11, around 1448. A conditionally timely representation of the events; the record was not made until 38 years later after oral tradition from a participant in the battle. Despite various heraldic errors in the descriptions of the individual banners (flags) , it is precisely the merit of this work to have passed down a description of the banners used in battle in the form of images up to our time
