Wernt Grimm (* 1912 ; † March 8, 2000 in Kassel ) was a German agricultural engineer and rose expert .

Life

Wernt Grimm was born as the son of the writer Hans Grimm . He grew up in Lippoldsberg in Northern Hesse and studied agriculture in Göttingen . He completed his studies with a doctorate . In 1938 he married his wife Hedi (Hedwig) . The marriage has four children.

After the Second World War , in which he was taken prisoner, he initially worked at the State Food Office in Bebra and from 1950 until his retirement in 1977 at the Agriculture Office in Kassel.

In retirement he devoted himself to his hobby old roses and developed into a recognized connoisseur. Together with his wife, he founded the “Roseninsel Park Wilhelmshöhe” association in 1977, which took care of the revitalization of the Rosarium founded in 1766 in Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe on the Roseninsel below Wilhelmshöhe Castle . Under the leadership of the Grimm couple, the association not only tended the existing roses, some of which were over 200 years old, but also planted new rose varieties that corresponded to the plans of the landscape park. The rose island became an attraction for rose lovers at the Federal Garden Show in Kassel in 1981. Wernt Grimm also took part in conferences for old roses.

Wernt Grimm researched historical garden art in Kassel with the oldest German rose garden, which was laid out under Landgrave Friedrich II of Hessen-Kassel, and came across rose paintings by Salomon Pinhas (1759–1837), court painter of the in the library of the Weißenstein castle wing Landgrave Friedrich II., And rediscovered the “Pearl of Weißenstein” in the rose garden, which had been lost for centuries. It is considered the first German breeding rose. It was bred and cultivated in 1795 by Daniel August Schwarzkopf, the then court gardener of Landgrave Friedrich II. Grimm campaigned for the new edition of a book with the historical rose pictures by Pinhas, which he did not live to see.

Wernt Grimm died on March 8, 2000 in Kassel.

Honors

Together with his wife he received the Kassel City Medal in 1981 and the Letter of Honor from the State of Hesse in 1997 .
