history

The grammar school was founded on July 28, 1868 as a private school Vlotho in the Kuhlmannschen Haus in Mühlenstrasse. In 1871, teaching was relocated to the so-called Kleinesche bowling alley on the site of today's Begemann travel company on (today's) Weserstraße. In 1875 there was another move to Armbstersche House No. 140 (today Textilhaus Finkhäuser) and in 1887/88 to what was then Koppelstraße (today: Poststraße), where a school building was built.

On April 1, 1901, the private school became the responsibility of the city of Vlotho and was named Höhere Stadtschule Vlotho a. d. Weser . From 1901 to 1918 the school had an average of 103 students. From 1920 there was a parents' council. In 1925/1926 the number of students had risen to 154. They had to pay school fees of 120 Reichsmarks (foreign students: 150 RM). In 1936 the number of pupils fell to 87 and rose to 232 in the 1943/44 school year.

In mid-January 1944, the 5th class was drafted as an anti-aircraft helper and received instruction in an anti-aircraft position at the Vlothoer railway bridge. On April 1, 1945, classes came to a complete standstill and resumed on January 7, 1946. By choosing a math and science school type, the name was changed to maths and science high school, grades 1–6 . In 1950 the orientation became modern and the name was then: Städtisches Neusprachliches Progymnasium Vlotho a. d. Weser . Due to lack of space, classes were taught in two shifts in the morning and in the afternoon, because since 1946 there have been an average of 341 students. From 1953 to 1959 the school building on Poststrasse was expanded. Since the 1950s there has been a school caretaker and a student council .

In 1962 the name changed for the fifth time to Städtisches Neusprachliches Gymnasium i. E. in Vlotho / Weser (since 1964 without the addition i.E.) In 1965 the Abitur was awarded to 11 students for the first time . Up to now, the students had to go through the upper school level in the grammar schools of neighboring cities.

On June 4, 1964, the groundbreaking ceremony for the new school building on the Winterberg, designed by Bielefeld architects Ulbrecht and Moratz, took place. This was available in June 1966. However, it was not officially handed over until December 9, 1968.

On June 4, 1966, the school was nationalized to the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, then called the State New Language High School in Vlotho and, by decree of August 17, 1967, the State Weser-Gymnasium Vlotho New Language High School for boys and girls . On January 1, 1974, the Weser-Gymnasium went back to municipal sponsorship due to a council resolution of December 4, 1973. For the ninth and so far last time the name was changed to the Weser-Gymnasium Vlotho , which is valid today .

The grammar school, which was planned to be two-part, grew up in three parts. In the school year 1968/1969 the number of pupils had risen to 464, so that in 1975/76 four lightweight class pavilions had to be built. In the 1981/82 school year the number of students reached its all-time high of 981. 113 students successfully passed their Abitur this school year.

In the meantime, Russian was also offered as a foreign language in addition to English, French and Latin.

In the early 2000s, the school was expanded and renovated. The main building was extended and a new double sports hall with music rooms and a library / media library was built. Due to a water ingress and subsequent mold infestation, the construction site made it into the national media.

For the first time in the 2013 Abitur class, the Abitur was obtained after only 12 years. From the Abitur class 2028 it will be possible to acquire it again after 13 years at the Weser-Gymnasium.
