West Caribbean Airways was a regional airline based in Medellín , Colombia and based at the local airport Enrique Olaya Herrera .

history

The airline was founded in 1998 and began flight operations in 2000. It was founded by the Colombian Hassan Tannir and was originally based on San Andres Island . Hassan Tannir sold the airline to a group of investors from Medellín, which relocated the airline's headquarters to Medellín in 2001.

West (new brand name) had two subsidiary airlines on Aruba and Costa Rica .

Due to the incidents listed below , West had to cease flight operations in 2005.

Incidents

  • On March 26, 2005, a West Caribbean Airways Let L-410 aircraft hit the hills near the Providencia runway on Old Providence Island. The crew consisting of 2 pilots and 6 of the 12 passengers died. A report suspects a technical error.
